Will Laser Hair Removal Stop Me from Ever Having to Shave Again?

Shaving and waxing aren’t just time consuming, but they also come with some uncomfortable side effects.
Waxing often leads to skin sensitivities and is a painful process, while shaving is often associated with ingrown hairs, skin irritation, and less-than-satisfying results. Also, because shaving doesn’t remove the roots, some of the hairs will still be visible even after shaving, especially if the follicles are dark.
If you’re looking for ways to get the perfect, baby smooth skin, read on. Below, we asked Dr. Safoora Zaka, our specialist at Medical Aesthetics & Laser, to explain the benefits of laser therapy for hair removal.
Understanding laser hair removal
Laser hair removal is a treatment in which small beams of heat are directed at the skin. These beams detect the pigment in the hair follicles and heat them up. As a result, the hair roots either become dormant or are permanently destroyed.
Hair roots are located just below the surface of the skin, and they can’t be damaged or removed via shaving, waxing, or tweezing.
Laser hair removal is one of the least uncomfortable hair removal methods, and our experts apply cream to protect your skin. However, because the hair removal process involves the use of heat, you may feel some discomfort.
Depending on your tolerance to tingling and heat, you can opt for laser hair removal almost anywhere on your body.
Are laser hair results permanent?
You may need 6-10 sessions of laser hair removal for optimal results because not all hairs are in the same growth stage at the same time.
This enables Dr. Zaka to target your hair follicles while they’re in the anagen stage, the growth stage in which hair follicles are attached to the roots. Multiple sessions ensures that the laser energy doesn’t only heat up the hair follicles but travels all the way to the roots.
Laser hair removal is a semi-permanent form of hair removal. As mentioned before, the treatment destroys some hair follicles and causes other hair follicles to become dormant. However, the state of dormancy achieved with laser hair removal is far longer than with traditional shaving methods.
When hair follicles do grow back after the treatment, they tend to be lighter and finer. With yearly maintenance sessions, the results can become permanent.
