How Ultherapy Can Tighten Your Saggy Skin

Surgical facelifts aren’t the only way you can get rid of loose, saggy skin on your face. Ultherapy, an ultrasound-based treatment, increases collagen in the skin, tightening and rejuvenating skin that has lost elasticity over the years.
Safoora Zaka, MD, our expert at Medical Aesthetics & Laser, often uses Ultherapy to rejuvenate skin elasticity in patients who want to avoid invasive procedures. Read on to learn how ultrasounds can rejuvenate your skin, and find out if you’re a good candidate for the treatment.
Ultrasounds for deep skin rejuvenation
Ultrasounds stimulate collagen production in the skin in two ways: 1) by generating heat and increasing blood flow to the cells, and 2) by slightly injuring the cells, prompting a healing mechanism that involves an increase in collagen production.
Ultrasounds also treat fine lines and wrinkles. One study that looked at the effectiveness of ultrasounds found that ultrasound energy can minimize sagging and wrinkles in the skin in a safe manner.
What to expect during an Ultherapy treatment
Preparation for the treatment is minimal. There are no restrictions on what you can eat or drink before Ultherapy.
Dr. Zaka will ask you to remove your makeup or lotions from the area you wish to treat. After the area is cleansed, Dr. Zaka will apply the device that delivers the ultrasound energy to your skin.
During the treatment, you may experience some heat or tingling, but you shouldn’t expect any pain. Depending on the size of the treated area, you can expect to spend anywhere between 30 and 90 minutes at our office.
Who is a good candidate for Ultherapy?
Patients with mild to moderate skin sagginess and no open infections or active acne in the treatment area are good candidates for Ultherapy. You may not be a good candidate if you take any medications or suffer from a condition that may interfere with the healing process.
Ultherapy can’t replace a surgical facelift, but it’s a viable option for patients who want to delay the need for facelifts and patients who don’t suffer from severe sagging or deep lines.
